James is a partner at Pollen Street Capital and has been with the team since 2004. Over the last fifteen years James has been investing across a spectrum of technology and financial services businesses, as well as a number of credit opportunities. James is focussed on originating new opportunities and working with management teams to build high-growth, sustainable businesses with technology and customer focus at the heart. As well as BidX1, James has responsibility for investments in bunq (a pan-European FinTech bank), Aryza (global banking software), Tandem Bank (a UK digital consumer bank with a focus on green lending and fairer finance), and Pacific Fund Systems (global fund administration software).

Our roots are in the traditional auction market. The BidX1 story started in Ireland in 2011 when our Founder, Stephen McCarthy, formed a Joint Venture with Allsop LLP. 82 properties were offered at our first auction in Dublin – 81 were sold, raising €15m.

The Future is bright!

2015
By 2015, BidX1 teams have sold €750m-worth of Irish property at traditional auctions. That year, we pioneer the use of online auctions in Ireland – allowing investors to browse, bid and buy online, from anywhere in the world.

Adopting a dual approach, we run online sales alongside traditional auctions throughout 2015 & 2016. Our digital sales quickly gain momentum with both buyers and sellers – and by the end of 2016, more than half of our auctions are held online.

2017
BidX1 becomes a fully digital property company, offering assets of every type via our bespoke digital platform – a platform tailored specifically for real estate transactions. That year, we break the €1bn mark for total property sales.

BidX1 launches in the UK market with the acquisition of London auctioneers Andrews & Robertson. A few months later, Pollen Street Capital, a London-based private equity house, announce a strategic investment in BidX1, to support our expansion into new markets.

BidX1 enters the South African market, forming a landmark partnership with Pam Golding Properties, South Africa’s leading property group.

BidX1 launches operations in Spain and Cyprus, opening offices in Madrid and Nicosia. Our first auctions in these markets coincide with sales in Ireland, the UK and South Africa, attracting 3 million views from over 180 countries.

With backing from Enterprise Ireland, BidX1 announce a Joint Agency initiative, partnering with other real estate agents who wish to sell properties on the BidX1 platform, leveraging our technology and global investor audience to optimise outcomes for their clients.

Fully digital transactions, and assets across multiple markets, attract a global audience to our platform – particularly those seeking investment opportunities. Bidders from more than 60 countries are active on the platform, with buyers from 30+ countries in 2020 alone.

BidX1 achieves carbon neutrality thanks to a sustainable business model based around digital innovation – and the substantial work undertaken across the company to integrate environmental principles into every aspect of our business.

BidX1 welcomes new investors. Global management consulting firm, Oliver Wyman, and doValue, the leading Servicer in Southern Europe for loan & real estate management services, both make strategic growth investments in BidX1.
